9/4/17: Ok my peeps... After getting 100% pissed off at blogger and saying f this and looking for a new hosting website only to get even more frustrated I've decided I'm going to give this one more try. But I'm serious if blogger doesn't get their shit together and stop messing up my pages I'm out. I'll post a link to my new blog if I ever find a hosting site I like, but that's not happening today so lets catch up.
There isn't much that's you've missed around here. I did a lot of gardening only to have one of those moments when the failure music plays in your head. I mean I got a few canned jars of goods but not as much as I was hoping. School has started back up for the kiddos and little A and I are starting tot school for him. We lost several of the bunnies we got from Bella and Mr. Snow including a whole litter that was still born or was all peanuts. Our turkeys are HUGE! We will be butchering them along with the 3 bunnies we still have for meat.(don't worry I'll post about it.)Our coop number 2 is finally laying but they are terrible at it...laying on top of the nest boxes instead of in them so 90% of their eggs are lost AND we have duck eggs. Which I was always told were super yummy but really we cant tell a difference. We have a incubator full of mixed eggs that should be hatching soon, and we recently got 25 broiler hens to fatten up for winter to butcher. Sadly we have lost 4 so we are down to 21 hens... which will equal out to 42 dinners and endless bone broth. Big Kev is getting better at trapping and we've even found a few semi good fishing holes so that's a plus (now if I could just get the gardening down we would be all set right??) I'm still looking for ways to make income while I'm home with the little feller so any input on that would be SWELL please and thank you. Anywho its 7 pm in our neck of the woods which means I have to get up and get on my nightly chores. Be back in the morning with more posting. Thanks for sticking with me. Tara
9/12/17: Ok. Well after fighting with blogger and my computer I am finally able to get on here to post. We had a pretty good weekend around our little farm. We got all the ground cover laid down and 4 boxes set up for our fall garden. We still need to find dirt to fill them; hopefully we can get that done this weekend so that I can do some planting. I have several seedlings in cups on the back porch waiting to be transferred. I was able to plant some kale and cabbage in pots but no idea how well those will turn out. Container planting seems to be touch and go around here. We had 16 chicken eggs hatch out in the incubator and so far 14 survivors. We moved the 21 broiler chicks out to a trampoline coop for the rest of their days; which will expire in about 6 weeks or so. We got nesting boxes set up for our pregger doe bunnies. We visited the local Trades Day in hopes of finding a new breeding age doe to introduce to Mr. Snow, but we came back empty handed. Kevin also got our No.8 Montgomery Ward Laundry Stove out of storage and began polishing it up. This stove is pretty awesome. It was given to us by his mom and just needed a little reviving. We are going to find a place to put it after we get it finished up and sealed. Lets see what else... Oh we got wood chopped up for the smoker as Kevin hopes to use that a great deal this winter for cooking food versus the crockpots or the oven(unless we want to use that to help heat the house) because we are trying to keep our electric bill as low as possible. It stinks having an all electric house during the heat of the summer and the cool of the winter. Other then all that we hung out with our kiddos and ate way to much yummy food. Seriously I gained 4 lbs over the weekend 😱 and we tried some of our latest batch of mead. Good stuff!
As the nights grow longer and the air gets its cool crisp smell it reminds us that its time to crunch down and work as hard as we can during the day light to get prepared for whatever this Texas winter might bring, but we also have to remember to relax when the sun goes down. It was nice to be able to start easing into that transition this weekend with our kiddos. Soon it will be dark by 5:30 and the nights will be so long they feel like they never end. With that being said I need to get off here and get on my morning chores. Have a great one!
